Introduction

A library is a collection of books, and possibly other material.
Since its inception with the foundation of NAS College, the successive librarians have worked hard for the growth of library. Some of them like Mr. Giaya Lal Sharma, Mr. Subhash Chand Sharma, Dr. S.D. Sharma, and Dr. Kiran Pal Upadhyay have contributed their best for the development of the NAS College library. Some of the ex- librarians are renowned in the region for their academic excellence. Currently Dr. Shuchi Kaushik is taking the legacy forward since 1st January 2015.
The library administrative setup has a faculty member as library in charge along with a team of teacher and student representatives from different faculties of the college. The librarian is an ex officio member of the committee. This committee supervises day to day activities of the library. Presently, Prof. Sanjeev Mahajan Head of Sociology Dept. is Professor In charge of the library committee.

The college has a well-stocked library with a collection of over 107000 books in different disciplines to cater to the academic and competitive requirements of the students in their field of study. The library subscribes to several national and international journals/magazines and 11 local and national Newspapers. The library with its vast collection of books, spacious reading rooms and reference sections provide atmosphere conducive to study. A competent and friendly library staff guides and counsels the students regarding books and the library facilities. Students are encouraged to become regular and responsible users of the library. Library provides access to E Journals, E books also.

Fine:- An overdue charge of Re 1/- per day per volume is charged for the late return of books.

Rules And Regulations:

The members of the library are required to follow the following rules and regulations

  • Members should observe strict silence inside the Library.
  • Members are not allowed to smoke, or carry eatables/drinks inside the Library premises.
  • The members are instructed to carry their College ID cards inside the library, and have to     produce it whenever asked by the library staff.
  • Member are not allowed to bring their Bags (laptop, shoulder, and sling) inside the library. These must be kept at the property counter of the library.
  • Members are advised not to keep money, or any other valuable goods at the property counter.
  • Library will not have any responsibility for loss or damage to personal property left in the premises.
  • While leaving the library, members are required to show their files, file covers, books etc. to the Library Staff on duty at the checkpoint, if asked.
  • Members should make an entry in the register provided before entering the library.
  • Any marking, scratching, damaging, mutilating, stealing, library materials or property shall invite disciplinary action against the defaulters.
  • Members should not rest or keep their feet on tables, chairs, shelves, etc.
  • Violation of library rules or misconduct by a member may invite discontinuation of the library privileges.
  • Registration should be done to become a library member prior to using the library resources.
  • Periodicals, rare books, Reference books are for consultation purpose only and will not be issued
  • The librarian may recall any book from any member at any time and the member shall return the same immediately.
  • Library cards are not transferable. The Members are responsible for the books borrowed on his/her card.
  • The members can’t be issued more than one book of same kind at a time.
  • Members are requested to check the condition of the book before getting it issued. Any damage found in the book should be brought to the notice of the staff on duty before getting it issued, otherwise reader will be held responsible for any damage or mutilation noticed at the time of return the books.
  • Books borrowed should be returned in good condition with in the stipulated time, failing which, fine will be levied as per the rules of the library.
  • Loss of any borrowed book must be reported immediately to the Librarian/Library Staff. The member must replace the lost book / pay the cost of the lost book as per the existing rules
  • The loss of library card should immediately be informed in writing to the library staff. After Checking and depositing requisite fee, the duplicate cards will be issued.
  • Disturbing arrangement of books on stacks, misplacing books and misusing the library is a punishable offence.
  • The infringement of the library rules shall make the student forfeit the privileges of membership of the library, in addition to the action taken as per the disciplinary rules of the college.
  • Members are advised to handle the books/ Journal very carefully; marking with pencil; writing or highlighting, tearing the pages or mutilating the same in any other way will be viewed very seriously. In such case member shall be held responsible unless these are brought to the notice of the library staff at the time of issue.
  • Outsiders should have prior permission from the principal to use the college library.

Library Services:

The library has following sections for smooth functioning

  • Circulation service/ Issue-return service: The library provides lending of books and allied reading material to students and staff members.
  • Book location service: It helps users in locating and getting their desired books and other reading material in the library.
  • Reference service: It is to assist users in getting their required information. Library has a separate reference collection consisting of encyclopedias, dictionaries, who's who, atlases, maps, yearbook Biographies, Bibliography services etc. The library staff also assists in giving instruction in accessing E resource.
  • Current awareness service: This service is provided by New Arrival Display Service: Selected books newly added to the library are displayed on the New Arrivals Display. In addition to this, the jackets of some of the selected books are displayed prominently on a bulletin board near the entrance. The purpose is to bring the newly added books to the notice of users.

Newspaper Clipping Services: The library has been compiling News Clips the Service collects all important, relevant and up-to-date news items, on different topics.

Reprographic service: Xeroxing of few pages of books (for academic purpose), articles, research papers from journals are also available subject to copyright act. This service is for research only.

SDI : (SELECTIVE DESSEMINATION INFORMATION) Information Search Service on Demand of Faculty and Scholars. Information Display and Notification: List of current arrivals and other important notices of library has been displayed on notice board.

User Orientation: On the First week of each academic session, a common user orientation program of library about general rules regarding membership and use of library is conducted to students. Later on the Library organizes orientation of library resources and services Course Wise at the beginning of the new session every year.

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue): OPAC provides information about the library collection. Users can search for an item of their choice in library holdings by Title, Author, Subject, Keyword, Publishers; call number etc.

Training Programme:

The library remains actively involved in providing vocational training to the students from Colleges/Universities, studying in courses like B.Lib, M.Lib. Students of library science can register themselves for such training programmes with the approval from principal of the college. The library provides this facility free of cost. At a time 3-4 students can be benefited from training program.

Museum Corner:

Library has a small museum corner of Archaeology, History and Painting. It was established in the year 1991. On 5th September 1992, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Kalyan Singh inaugurated the new gallery of the museum and declared a grant of Rs. 1,68,000/- for the development of the museum. The museum was developed and maintained by the staff of History Department and Drawing Department of the college.

National Museum, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of India collaborated to establish “A Museum Corner” in the college as a joint venture. National Museum, New Delhi, thus provided technical know-how along with eleven best models of sculpture from their collection on loan basis and fifteen reproductions of the paintings of prominent artists. These models of sculptures are the best collection of the college Museum.

The Museum Corner in the college is a great place of learning of History, Art, Archaeology and Painting. The students of History and Drawing and Painting departments visit museum as part of their academic activity. Apart from this, other students are also benefited from it. Museum Corner also houses a small library. College is also planning to start vocational courses in museology, tourism, art appreciation programs etc.
